Hydroponic Vegetable Farm

The Story

12 years ago, started a study on the hydroponic field inspired by Israel Ambassador Mr. Puran Rao. In hydroponic farming dependency on electricity is very high, in those days India had huge electricity crises and to setup up, a solar farm was too costly with a CAPEX cost of INR 14 crore per MW.  

      So I side-tracked the idea of working in the field of hydroponics for time being. But I was in search of indigenously developed good technology. I visited more than 30 farms in India and met more than 70+ consultants, but I was not convinced about the working pattern, microeconomics, and technology advancements (the visits I made were till 5 years ago I met Mr. Manish Raut of HiMedia Labs (Higronics). 

After meeting him I visited a lab at Ghatkopar and attended his training programs to have deeper knowledge in the field. Although I got mesmerized by the lab they had developed, an in-depth study of plant biology still, I told him that we will work on this when they will have their captive functional farm of 1 acre at least.

Himedia Labs (Mr. Manish) was consistently working on the technology development and farm development, I was observing developments. Finally, they developed a fully automated farm in Igatpuri, District Nasik, State Maharashtra, India.

Finally my search for hydroponic technology ended, I visited the farm and saw the remarkable work they have done.

The agriculture field has always been the great dependency on many factors like soil, water/rain, and other environmental factors.  Farmers face huge problems due to these dependencies.

To address the sticking- points of chemical burden and water scarcity, 2016 saw HiMedia venture into hydroponics, a soil-less farming technology, an exceptional first-of-its-kind experience delivered to our customers. 

With the mission of sustainability, social responsibility, and bringing about change for the benefit of all, Higronics came into being. The central philosophy of Higronics is built around the fundamentals of social upliftment through innovation and education, as well as and intention of leaving behind a better planet.

MD’s Venture (Melind Deshpande) is working consistently on sustainable agriculture for more than 12 years. In these 12 years of the journey following are some of the pain areas which has been observed in an agricultural field in India.

Water- Due to dependency on the nature/natural resources, agricultural produce is unpredictable

Soil -Due to excessive use of fertilizers soil condition is also deteriorating aggressively.

Climatic Condition - Due to global warming, the season cycle is changing drastically.

Sun - The intensity of sun rays is increasing due to the depletion of the Ozone layer 

Proximity -Farm to market is another pain area; the majority of the market is in cities, and transportation cost from farm to market in the city is huge.   

Considering all the above factors hydroponics is the solution that caters to the majority of the problems due to the following salient points

Water - Hydroponics required very less water compared to conventional farming as the same water is recirculated and reused

Soil - Hydroponic is no soil farming and nutrients are supplied through circulating water, no fertilizers are used in this system. The farm is equipped with automated precision nutrient mixing and dosing system. 

Climatic condition -Hydroponic farm is developed in polyhouse so there is no dependency on the environmental conditions. Polyhouse is equipped with a complete automated sensor-driven climate control system with the help of fans, sprinklers, fogging system the environment inside the polyhouse is controlled.

Sun - Polyhouse has an automated light intensity management system that controls the plant's exposure to the sun.

Proximity - A farm will be planned near the city to drastically reduce the transportation cost.

More Produce - In the Hydroponic system, the produce is 1.5 times more compared to conventional agriculture.

New edge organic produce yields more price the farmers 

Grow Non-season Variety - The strategy to produce varieties, in non-season, gives a multiplier effect to the final product price. 

So, it will be 4 times effect - 1.5 times yield x new age organic price x non-seasonal produce price. 

One acre can yield more than 75lac in one year, on an investment of 1.6 cr in the project.  

 

What is MD’s Venture Role? 

To identify prospective implementors who will be willing to put up the farm with Higronics Technology.

To do a preliminary remote site survey/feasibility study and submit compiled data of prospective implementor to Higronics.

To answer the prospective implementor’s primary questions and give a brief financial synopsis/financial viability report to prospective implementors. (Final techno commercial Quote will be given by Higronics to the implementor after a physical survey of the site)     

To coordinate with prospective implementors and Higronics for the smooth transition of the project till the election of the farm.

To provide ongoing training (if required) and help Higronics in monitoring the farm on a periodical basis.   

To supply required Higronics nutrients and consumables to the farm on an ongoing basis.
